Many Primary Schools will be familiar with the PATHS programme and use it extensively with great results. The following letter is from Banardos to explain the resources further:

Dear parents,

As some of you will know, Barnardo’s have been supporting a number of St Helens Primary Schools with the implementation of the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Programme, The PATHS® Programme for Schools (UK Version).   The PATHS® Programme is an evidence-based programme aimed at 4 – 11 year olds (primary age), that teaches pro-social skills, emotion understanding, social problem-solving and self-control. It covers five areas of SEL:

  • Self-Awareness
  • Self-Management
  • Social Awareness
  • Relationship Skills
  • Responsible Decision Making

The programme supports the positive mental-health and well-being of children, and in St Helens Primary Schools during 2018-19 we saw results of a 65% reduction or stable score in aggression and disruptive behaviour, 75% improved or stable score in concentration and attention, 73% improved or stable score in social and emotional competence, and a 64% improvement in pupils’ empathy. In studies in the US, PATHS® and SEL programmes have also been shown to have a positive impact on academic attainment. “It’s so encouraging that PATHS facilitates ways to support children to feel good about themselves. Positive mental well-being is so important and this prioritises it within the school day – every day” – Pam Potter, Head Teacher at Garswood Primary, one of the schools enrolled on the PATHS® Programme.

During this period of school closures we are acutely aware that the mental health and well-being of children is more important than ever, and the effects of this situation may last for a long time.  In order to try to support children’s well-being at home, the Barnardo’s team have been working hard to continue providing SEL at home.  We are providing a large range of materials that will be suitable for all children aged 3-11, and while these materials are designed to be completed with parental support, there will also be materials that can be completed independently.

With the support of St. Helens CCG we are making our resources available to all St Helens Primary Schools. These resources will be issued to all Primary Schools weekly on Fridays, commencing Friday 17th April 2020, and will be provided in advance of their official launch on our social media channels. These materials will be provided to you via a simple downloadable link which can then be shared with your pupils and their families via your online learning platforms, virtual lessons, or other methods of online curriculum. We will continue to launch our materials on a daily basis on our Facebook and Twitter pages and we would ask that if you plan on using these materials, please do not share on social media until after we’ve shared them.  Attached is a full work plan which takes us to the end of the academic year if required in the current circumstances.
